Big Grin A Whale of the Journey Exploring Oregon
Mountains - Oregon ventures abound!

Oh whoa, a whale! I heard my wife exclaiming away from motel room. I wondered where on the planet she was and what sort of prank she was taking as her voice drifted in by way of a window. I lay in a semi-conscious state in the room, trying to get a few more winks after our late night trip down the Oregon coast. The children voices chimed in with hers, back behind our motel room somewhere, exclaiming about their first sitings of sharks - out there. For more information, consider checking out: sharefile ftp. Surprising awake, I realized that they were talking about whales, and were calling me to get out there before I missed them - no kidding involved!

A good thing I moved too, because I had never seen anything like that in my own lifetime. I certainly never likely to be so lucky on this jaunt we mountain folks from Montana had taken to the Oregon coast. There it was, after I came from the lodge room, down the corridor and around the building, to my amazement. As huge as life and to your complete surprise, right

off the rocky shore below the motel we were staying in in Seaside, Oregon, a pair of sharks were working their way along within close view of the shore. To local folks and to others that live along the countries shorelines that might not have been any big deal. But to me, my partner Evie and the kids, Ash and Rob, actually seeing a whale spouting - just blew us away!

We were on a journey - a hut research journey - to-the shore which Ill look into more in another report. Fleetingly, we first passed through Washington, studying the Mt. Tahoma Hut Program over near Mount Rainier. Our next halt was at the Oregon State Park at Beverly Beach to-see what they had done with the magic of yurts. Our third stop was back in eastern Oregon, looking at the Wing Ridge Ski Tours hut/wall tent setup back up in the Wallowa National Forest end-of Oregon. Quite wonderful stuff they were putting together and well must cover these more on down the story-line.

A genuine high point of the journey, Seaside, Oregon presented a little of magic towards the research over a scale I'd not remotely anticipated. Our coastal basecamp was an outstanding hotel, the Seashore Inn, immediately on the shoreline. It was the type of place that when you went around to the sea side of the hotel you managed to clambor over the stones and because of the waters edge. The possibility of actually obtaining a motel room directly on the ocean shore was one particular goals that seldom concerns reality, as mentioned before, having grown-up in Colorado and Montana. But, the wonder of finding real whales working the waters quickly shore from that area - that truly pushed the envelope of my expectations. Our little family had traveled late into the night, working our solution to this Sea-side spot, and collapsed into the hotel room in-the wee hours. To your joy, after the discovery of the whales, second thing in the morning the children unearthed that the spot had a great in-door pool. They settled in there to play and rest in the past days journey. We also found we were within an easy walk of the gift shops, coffee shops and restaurants of Sea-side, a truly charming, silent, right on the shore little group, with a full panoramic view of the Pacific Ocean right over the road - Highway 101.

Right round the building corner from our place we had our very own bit of Pacific Ocean coastline for your couple of days we stayed in that wonderful spot. The kids observed star fish around the rocks under water, the most wonderful little multi-colored sea urchins, and an endless assortment of sea shells along the shore once the tide went out. The crowning touch obviously were the whales, real spouting whales swimming right out in the nearby waters.

We stayed in that little part of paradise for a couple of days, enjoying the region around Sea-side. We explored the near-by coastal pieces, marveling at the clusters at Canon Beach, drinking in these incredible views out-to the ocean, and marveling at the roar of the waves on the rocks. Fantastic items of an environment of the sort people from the Rocky Mountains never imagined possible.

The third day we gathered up our things, pulled the water-logged children out of the pool, and continued our exploration of the yurts and huts of the Pacific northwest. During a brief stop-over at Beverly Beach we studied the great yurts of the Oregon Parks process, checking out a yurt they'd put in place for van leases. That was certainly a product for future reference on some return trip to the region - a yurt on the Pacific coastline - imagine that.

Our trips eventually led us to leave the coastal areas and head inland to the far northeast corner of Oregon, back-up in to the Wallowa section of the state and the Wallowa Mountains. Outside of the little town of Joseph, I was led by Roger Averbeck of Wing Ridge Ski Tours o-n a trip up toward the Eagle Cap Wilderness, showing me his accommodations for winter ski trips. He gives fully furnished and insulated wall tents back up in the timber, just down from mountain people and plates, ideal terrain for that hard-core back-country ski enthusiast.

That trip through Oregon was an excursion to remember in the sea shores to the eastern mountains. We were so thankful that at every basecamp area along our long path there were excellent resort hotels, all at reasonable prices. In the case of the unbelievable Sea-side place, they actually used in the whale watching trend at no extra charge.
